Quarry fight goes up a level By Emily O’Connell WEEDONS residents are backing their Templeton neighbours in a bid to stop plans for a new quarry development. Two weeks ago, Fulton Hogan put forward a plan for a quarry on a 170ha section of land on Dawsons, Curraghs and Jones Rds which borders Weedons and

Templeton. More than 200 people gathered in St Saviour’s Anglican Church on Kirk Rd on Wednesday to discuss the proposal. Weedons Residents’ Association secretary Gary Doyle said the group will be supporting its Templeton neighbours as much as it can. “All we can do is try and fight it as well,” he said.

Mr Doyle said traffic is going to be a major problem for the area. “Maddisons Rd and Jones Rd are not suitable for a lot of heavy traffic, they’re not wide enough,” he said. Templeton Residents’ Association chairman Garry Kilday said Wednesday’s meeting was very successful.

Said Mr Kilday: “We had an awesome turn out. It was an emotive session because there were people there who are so badly affected.” Mr Kilday said the association is now creating an action group from people who attended the meeting. “The majority [of people] who were there are going to be in this group. Nobody wants this thing

[the quarry] where it is,” he said. Mr Kilday said the group will be placing signs to protest the quarry on houses and in different spots in Templeton. He said a concern the group has other than the health risks is whether there will be public consultation on the resource consent application. •Turn to page 5

Donations go up in smoke By Emily O’Connell HOUSEHOLD GOODS, books and clothing destined for the needy have gone up in smoke. And that frustrates Hornby Community Care Centre manager Linda Turner. “It’s done a lot of damage to the bin but also to the donations and, of course, over the weekends, that’s the busy time,” Mrs Turner said. The centre’s donation bin was set alight in the early evening of Saturday, January 6. The fire was lit by a boy aged between 10-13, who was with a group of other youngsters, she said. The boy’s name, which was provided to the centre, had been passed on to police. Mrs Turner says the centre is “the heart of the community.” It has an opportunity store where clothing and household goods left in bins like the one set alight are sold cheaply. •Turn to page 7

The Selwyn District Council and Environment Canterbury will sign off consents – which means Templeton people will desperately need help from their Weedons neighbours. At this point they are ready to help. No surprises what local community boards will prioritise this dition yeardatE] (see page 3). News Top priorities for this year By Emily O’Connell HORNBY’S $35.7 million mega centre and the Yaldhurst Village are both key priorities for the community boards this year. Western News asked Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton and Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood community board members what the important issues in their areas were. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board chairman Mike Mora said the Yaldhurst Village was a significant matter which the board will be working “very closely” on with the Selywn District Council and city council. “There are still a lot of legal issues to be sorted out and variations of consents and stuff which have shut quite a lot of the development out,” he said. Mr Mora described the Yaldhurst Village development is “an absolute disaster.” Over the course of the year, he also said the community board wanted to be proactive, not reactive. “What happens sometimes is the bureaucracy grinds away and comes up with a plan, and sometimes those plans don’t work in reality and then we have to go

into reactive mode to try and fix something,” Mr Mora said. He said confirming a location for Hornby’s mega centre was a major priority. The city council plans to build the centre at Denton Park. However, the proposed facility has been highly controversial with sports clubs concerned about the loss of their home ground. Mr Mora said “we need to get the best solution that will work.”

Rates: Are you getting your money’s worth By Julia Evans THE FENDALTON, Waimairi and Harewood wards are putting $100 million into the city’s rates fund. That’s more than a fifth of the total $497 million the city council collected in rates for the 2016/17 year. But Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board deputy chairman Sam MacDonald says the $100 million doesn’t always match the level of service local ratepayers get. Mr MacDonald, an accountant, has done a financial exercise on the rates people in the wards pay. “I wanted to get it particularly in the lead up to the Long Term Plan so we can advocate for things like getting our roads fixed and getting the basics covered,” he said. Mr MacDonald said although the wards put a “high” amount of money into the city council’s rates fund, residents aren’t always getting things like good roading, clean water and rubbish collected. “We can say this is how much we pay into the kitty so it should translate . . . service shouldn’t

He also doesn’t want rates to increase. “I expect rate increases to be at a minimum, we’re already putting in that $100 million,” he said. Rehoming unwanted and With the SPCA and other organisations rehoming hundreds of animals this summer, reporter Emily O’Connell checks out some of the potential pets desperately in need of some love and attention PASCAL THE cat is looking for a new home. And if she gets one, the nineyear-old will become one of hundreds of cats rehomed by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Canterbury this summer. Pascal is an affectionate and loving animal, according to SPCA southern region general manager Barry Helem. But the furry feline has been without a home for two months. Mr Helem said Pascal was found lost in Ashburton and was taken to a vet clinic as she had an injured tongue and some dental

issues. She was collected by the SPCA ambulance and had a few teeth removed as well as other treatments to help her heal. Pascal then went to a foster home where her foster parents said she loved “rolling around, chilling out in front of the fan

This total is an 11 per cent increase over the same period last year,” he said. Pascal is one of about 20 cats SPCA Canterbury is currently trying to rehome. The organisation has 321 animals on-site at present and 139 animals in foster homes. Adoption fees for an adult cat like Pascal are $150, kittens $250, adult dogs $250, puppies $350 and rabbits $50. In a bid to continue rehoming animals, SPCA Canterbury has a Facebook page which profiles different animals in their care. The page has more than 22,000 followers. SPCA is a charity which helps protect animals that are sick, injured, lost, abused or simply abandoned. Mrs Turner is thankful for the 28 volunteers who keep the centre running. “Our volunteers are mostly older ladies . . . CBHS, Rangi Ruru stand out By Andrew King IT WAS a successful outing for Christchurch Boys’ High and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School rowers at the weekend with more than 10 golds won between them at the Canterbury championships. More than 900 competitors from 28 clubs and schools in Canterbury competed for medals on Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel, on Saturday and Sunday. CBHS won eight golds – which included a blistering fast time of 6min 13.42sec to win the men’s open eights – as well as three silver and three bronze medals. Rangi Ruru won six golds, with two of those coming in the women’s novice eights and i ntermediate eights, two silver and three bronze medals. I DON’T know about you, but I find that too much time alone is not good for me. That’s not to say I’m never alone. I like peace and quiet but I also know that too much of it’s not healthy. Getting the balance right can be a tricky thing to work out. I’m a community development worker in Riccarton. My role is about welcoming people into the community and helping them to connect with others. I do this by visiting new people with welcome packs, which include an information booklet of local groups and activities as well as some homebaking and preserves from the local community garden. It’s about giving everyone the opportunity to connect at some level in their new community. Not everything

appeals to everyone and you can’t do everything, but we are social beings and we all need to connect with other people sometimes for our own mental health and well-being. I love this job and am passionate about people connecting with each other. Isolation is not helpful for anyone. Linking new people in as quickly as possible goes a long way to avoiding things like loneliness and depression. We are blessed to have a great num-

ber of activities and services happening right here in our local community. Some of these activities are for children, some for older people, some for men, some for women and some are for everyone. Examples include a fortnightly café, to weekly fruit and vegetable co-operative, exercise classes, community garden and a craft group. There is no excuse not to link in somewhere. If you are new to Riccarton or want to get out and about, don’t sit at home and feel alone – get involved in a way that works for you. New concept in fitness training comes to Wigram Wigram is to be the latest Christchurch location for one of the world’s fastestgrowing fitness trends when the new F45 Training gym opens there later this month. Developed in Sydney by Rob Deutsch, a former equities trader, F45, or Functional 45 minutes, is a team-based HIIT (highintensity interval training) workout protocol that focuses on motivation, innovation and results. Franchise owner of the Wigram gym, Marcin Miroslaw, who also has F45 franchises in the central city (the first in the South Island) and Ferrymead, says one of the key advantages of the F45 concept is that participants don’t need to think about what they have to do when they come to the gym for a workout. “The programme is all laid out for members and there are two personal trainers at each class, who correct people’s technique, motivate and encourage them, plus there’s the music designed by one of the world’s top DJs to keep them pumped,” Marcin says. Over the 45-minute programme, participants proceed round the circuit doing short bursts of exercise, with shorter breaks in between. Circuit styles are different every

day and there are more than 30 different workouts, combining elements of HIIT, Circuit Training, and Functional Training. This combination of interval, cardiovascular and strength training has been proven to be the most effective workout method for burning fat and building lean muscle. “It’s enjoyable, and it brings results,” Marcin says. “Workouts change daily and are never repeated, and all the workouts are tested by the F45 Athletic department to optimise the results and experience of the participants.” F45 offers several membership options, but most people opt for the month-on-month membership, with 28 days’ cancellation notice, he says. “Members have unlimited access to all classes and there is no joining or cancellation fee.” A big part of the F45 programme is the eight-week challenge. Run four times a year, it is a fantastic way to help people lose weight and reach their fitness goals, Marcin says. “The F45 eight-week challenge also includes nutritional support, shopping lists, recipes and daily meal plans and goal tracking, which helps people achieve their weight loss goals in a much healthier way

than going on diets. The next eight-week challenge starts on January 29. “F45 has been established in more than 30 countries around the world, and since coming to New Zealand, it has really taken off here. It’s different from other gyms as it is a big part of the community, with involvement in social events and members feeling that they are part of a team.

Roast the capsicums over the hot grill of the barbecue until the skin has blackened then remove from the heat, place in a plastic bag and loosely tie shut. Leave for 30min, then remove the capsicums from the bag. Peel and discard the charred skin and seeds. Roughly chop the flesh and put in a bowl with the oil. Mix corn of cob with finely chopped onion, spring onions, garlic and ginger, then mix into the capsicum. Add the lime juice and soy sauce. Finely chop the beans and combine everything. Store in a jar in the fridge for up to a week.

So what can you do to ward off pain and stiffness and boost your energy and alertness? 10 simple stretching exercises at your desk that will release tension from head to toe. They take only a few minutes. Set the alarm on your cell phone or computer to go off every hour to remind you it’s time to get up and stretch. Just stand up and sit down - no hands If you stand up and sit down (over and over) without using your hands it can be a challenge, do it while you’re on the phone; no one will know. Shrug your shoulders - to release the neck and shoulders Inhale deeply and shrug your shoulders, lifting them high up to your ears. Hold. Release and drop. Repeat three times. Loosen the hands with air circles Clench both fists, stretching both hands

out in front of you. Make circles in the air, first in one direction, to the count of ten. Then reverse the circles. Shake out the hands. Point your fingers - good for hands, wrist, and forearms

Stretch your left hand out in front of you, pointing fingers toward the floor. Use your right hand to increase the stretch, pushing your fingers down and toward the body. Excitement building along with new campus

Enormous progress is being made in the construction of a new campus for Avonside Girls’ High School and Shirley Boys’ High School. Some 5000 piles have now been driven into the ground at the site in QEII Park. The state of the art campus is on track to be opened for term two of 2019.

Shirley Intermediate When Shirley Intermediate School’s two swimming pools were earthquake damaged the SIS Board of Trustees, having found no likely help sources, undertook costly repairs. Now, after six summers their pupils continue to reap the benefits. In addition to swimming almost daily, pupils can also join the endurance club. As few SIS pupils attend swim clubs, It is significant whenever the 1km continuous swimming certificate is awarded. In addition to hosting Banks Avenue and Shirley Primary schools (who can use the
